 Obeying instantly, I unfurled my legs and moved across the room toward him.  He gazed at me, his expression still inscrutable, and then slowly he moved around to my back.

“Close your eyes.”



 Again, I complied without hesitation. I felt something soft brush gently against my eyelids, a smooth, silky fabric blocking out all remaining light as it tightened against my skin. He was blindfolding me.

My heart struck my chest wall with a sudden instinctive foretaste of what was to come. The blindfold, his insistence that I wear my red shoes, his near-naked form in the doorway, suggested only one thing. But his talk of my needing to learn a lesson, his tone, and impenetrable mood hinted at something different. Nonetheless, my skin prickled with eager expectation as I waited for my next instruction in the darkness behind my eyelids.



 Suddenly, his voice startled me. He was closer than I’d imagined, his breath warm against my ear, his smell … exquisite. “How does that make you feel?”

Misreading the question, I nodded to let him know I was okay.



 “No, Angel. Tell me how it makes you feel.” His voice was slightly harsher than before, more demanding.

I thought about what he wanted me to say, trying to tune in to the sensations I was feeling, but struggling.



“Restricted,” I said finally.



 “Anything else?” He’d shifted, his lips grazing the lobe of my other ear now.



 “Dependent.”



 “Think beyond the blindfold.”



My mind searched for the answer, and then after a beat I whispered, “Aware. I feel more aware.”



 “Of what?”



 “You.”



 “What is it about me you’re more aware of?”



 “How close you are … Your scent.”



 “My scent? And what does it smell like?”



 Hesitating, I scrambled for words to try and describe it, eventually arriving at, “You.”



 I felt him smile briefly against my cheek and then he was gone.

“What? Do you want me to say you’re my first to get you back in there? Not even you can be that naïve.” She figured those hurtful words had the impact he’d intended. “I need the elevator; I’m going home.” She almost yelled those words.

She schooled her facial features at his words. They were getting more derogatory with each comment he made. He was mad, but no longer pushing her to perform. Instead, he walked away, muttering, “I could have brought anyone up here tonight. You fucking wore that fucking dress, flashing me those fucking tits all goddamn night, and now you get a conscience?” 

Lara wanted out. She went for the call button and the elevator doors opened. She rushed on, fighting the tears his stinging words caused. “Goddammit! You’re fucking pissing me off.”

He darted across the foyer, sticking a hand between the closing elevator doors. He entered, quickly working a hidden keypad on the inside. He left the elevator and the doors didn’t shut. Even when she reached out to push the close button, they remained open. He came back into view, and she moved to the far side of the elevator, wiping a stray tear away before it fell. He stepped back inside, this time with his suit jacket on. 

“What are you doing?”

“You aren’t walking home alone.” He punched another code into the keypad. The elevator doors shut and they began to descend. 

“I don’t want you to walk me home,” she said defiantly.

“I don’t care.” He stood at the front of the elevator and she stood in the back. Neither said another word. He walked out first, keeping his distance. She ignored him as he exited through his private entrance. She went the other direction through the parking garage. He frustratingly met her on the street at the front of the building. At the street corner, she was so disgruntled by his presence she didn’t see the car until Reed took her arm, hoisting her back on the sidewalk as it passed by. 

She’d have rather been hit by the car than to have him touching her again. She yanked her arm free with such force she stumbled several feet. 

“You’re a hard-headed, stubborn little thing.” Once on the street, she walked the distance to her apartment with him by her side. Aggravated, she whipped around when he entered her building. 

“Why are you following me? I’m not having sex with you at my apartment either,” she stated, trying for a cutting remark. Every eye in the foyer turned their way. 

“Yeah, that offer’s off the table now, babe. You don’t play fair,” he said, 

following her inside a waiting elevator.

If you are looking for a couple that is the total package then look no farther than Lara and Reed.  These two people will give you intelligent conversations, banter that will have you laughing out loud, constant angst that only a couple who have hardly anything in common can bring and they will bring you love, with some hot passionate scenes.  With this you also get a huge dose of two people finding a compromise in trust, personality, kindness and values and so much more. 

Lara is a very kind hearted woman who just wants to start her new job, live in peace with her best friend and just find happiness.  She watches what she spends and tries to make what she has last and work for every aspect of her life.  It would figure that on her first day of work at the new job, she would dress in her lucky shoes, business suit and fancy coat but nothing was going to stop her from going to work, except maybe falling in the middle of the street and almost being run over by Reed. 

Reed Prescott is a man who is guarded and jaded.  He has made his mark in the business world and expects everyone can be bought.  When he saw Lara laying on the sidewalk his first thoughts weren’t of her injuries, finding a way to convince her not file a lawsuit.  It wasn’t until Reed spent some time with Lara to pacify her that he realizes there is more to this woman than he assumed, she has a heart, a compassion towards others and life and most of all she doesn’t blame him for the accident. 

Now that you can see the differences in these two characters you can only imagine what bumps in the road they are going to experience if they find their happy ever after.  I really enjoyed the majority of the book.   I will admit there were times Lara was just too sappy sweet for me and Reed was quickly becoming the nonredeemable butthole, how those two would ever make it was beyond me and I wasn’t even sure at times if I wanted them to be together.  Yet just when I thought that, the author did a brilliant job at having Lara show me why Reed was worth the work and allowed Reed to show me that he was willing to change for Lara.  The blending of the two happens before your eyes and you don’t even know it till it has already happened because this author knows how to engage your emotions into the story.    

This was a well written book, kept me entertained and engaged from page one till the end.
