**Blog Tour** Simmering Ice by Veronica Forand and Susan Scott Shelley

When the gloves come off, she’s worth the penalty...
Physical therapist Annie Davidson is great at her job but unlucky when it comes to love. She’s just out of a bad relationship. A really bad relationship. All she can do is focus on work...that is until she runs into professional hockey player Alec O’Meara. She’s a touch insecure and doesn’t understand why he’s interested in her.
Despite being one of the biggest players on the team, right winger Alec O'Meara prefers finesse over force. After the tragic death of his wife, he likes to keep things loose on and off the ice. But the red-headed Annie challenges his beliefs and makes him think about taking their relationship to the net.
The passion and fun they share is addicting and makes them long for more. But her insecurities that she's not good enough, and his anxiety over a long-term commitment will keep them apart, unless they can find a way to break through the defenses they've built around their hearts.

Excerpt:

“The first one to reach twenty points wins.”

“What’s the prize?”

His eyes heated. “The winner gets to decide.”

A stab of awareness lanced through her. She grabbed a ball, dribbled down the court, and executed a perfect lay-up.

Alec jogged to her side. “Nice moves.” He ran a fingertip down the side of her face then knocked the ball out of her hands and took off down the court.

“That’s not very sportsmanlike,” she called after him and raced to catch up. The ball swooshed through the net.

“Three pointer.” He grinned and caught the rebound. The muscles in his back and arms bunched with every dibble.

Alec’s big body blocked hers. She reached around him and managed to knock the ball free. Elbowing him in the ribs, she attempted to regain possession.

It slipped from his grip too easily. She stopped moving. “Are you going easy on me? If you think you’re going to let me win….”

“You kidding? No way. I already know what I want as a prize.”

“Good.” She gave him a sweet smile, then pounced and snagged the ball. Sneakers squeaked against the polished wood floor as they raced back and forth, their bodies bumping together when they reached each basket.

As the points mounted, her body heated and sweat trickled down her back. Alec may have been a seasoned athlete, but in addition to her weekend basketball league, she kept herself in shape with regular runs on the beach.

A whistle exited his lips, and he wiped sweat off of his forehead. “You’re good.”

She watched the ball sail into the net. Fifteen points for her. “Thanks.”

“But I play to win.” He gently nudged her side, and the ball bounced out of her hands.

“Hey.”

He held the ball high over his head. “Think I’m still going easy on you?”

Holding back a laugh, she launched herself at the ball. The tips of her fingers brushed the dimpled surface, and then met the soft material of Alec’s shirt. “That’s not playing fair.”

“No?” With a sharp pivot, he jumped and arced the ball through the air. It bounced off the backboard, then rolled around the rim and fell through the net in another three-pointer. He pumped his fist in the air. “That’s twenty points. I win.”

“Congratulations. So, what do you want as your prize?”

He dropped the ball, and it rolled across the court. Warm hands cupped her face. His thumb brushed her cheek. “This,” he murmured and lowered his head toward hers.

Firm lips coaxed hers apart, and his tongue traced the line of her lips before diving inside to dual with hers. Annie grasped his biceps and hung on as her system went on overdrive. Seeking more, she rose onto her toes and leaned into him.

With a low growl, Alec slid his hands to tangle in her hair. He deepened the kiss. Everything faded but the feel of his mouth on hers and the heat of his body against her own.

After a long moment, she angled her head away and slipped her arms around his waist.

His muscles tightened at her touch.

“I want a rematch.” She almost didn’t recognize her own voice, pitched lower and breathless.

“Any time. Anywhere.” The whispered words trailed over her skin, and she didn’t care at all about keeping score.

We meet Annie, a physio, and Alec, the Hustlers' star player and a favourite of the ladies, at the start of the book when they are both single and fighting their own personal demons. Recently widowed and not yet ready to find love again, Alec spends all his time training for his ice hockey matches and hanging out with the guys, and dating beautiful women. None of these dates last long before he moves onto the next one.

Annie loves her job as a physio therapist, helping children back on their feet after accidents and illnesses. A keen athlete, she lives alone in a dilapidated house that she rents from a very old friend. On the outside, Annie appears confident and together, but with constant put downs and messages of disapproval from her mother, she battles with feelings of not being good enough.

As part of the teams plans to raise the profile of their players, Alec and his teammates frequently visit the unit that Annie works in an attempt to inspire the youngsters to get back on their feet, and it is here that Alec first lays eyes on the pretty red head that seems to tug at his heart strings as well as remind him of his late wife with...

Cue heartwarming "girl meets boy love story" with a happy ending.

This little romance takes us on a ride where things don't always go to plan. Met with disasters and hiccups, Alec and Annie grow closer and find themselves falling in love.

Forand and Scott Shelley's writing style is simple and easy to read, although the dialogue was often confusing due to a distinct lack of tag lines and also no formatting, therefore it was sometimes difficult to follow parts of the story without reading back or reading ahead. The secondary characters were a little 2D. However, the parts they played helped to move the story along. I felt that some scenes were a little unrealistic, particularly ones concerning Annie's mother. Despite this, I did enjoy reading it and loved Alec's devotion to the contrastingly insecure character of Annie.

Excerpt

Julie and Matt led Amanda back to the desk. They bent the handcuffed redhead at the waist, pushing her over the desktop so that her breasts were about a foot from the edge.

"My boyfriend's going to have a little fun with the two of us now," Julie announced, and then walked around to the opposite end of the desk, bending herself over it in the same manner as Amanda, the two girls' faces about six inches apart now. The blonde secretary's eyes were lit up with excitement behind her glasses...

Matt stepped behind Julie first and began rubbing and massaging her ass. The girl moaned contentedly at the attention, although with slight anticipation. She didn't have to wait long--a few seconds later, the thundering crack of skin on skin echoed through the office as the palm of his hand met his girlfriend's asscheek. Julie's eyes widened and she gave a loud, exuberant moan. The spanking continued, and Amanda lost count after five or six strikes. Julie stared lustfully at her new playmate.

The spanking stopped, and Matt's hand reached between his girlfriend's legs. Julie's eyes slipped shut; her expression changed to one of increased relaxation and bliss, and Amanda knew that her counterpart was being fingered even before the rhythmic moaning began.

He's going to do that to me next. Amanda's own clit began to throb again at the thought. While his girlfriend watches... and I couldn't do anything about it even if I wanted to.

She didn't have to wait long. Matt pulled his attention away, causing Julie to sigh longingly. He walked around the desk and took his place behind Amanda.

She felt his hands on her ass, rubbing and caressing. Her first concern was that her counterpart might get jealous--Amanda certainly wanted to remain on Julie's good side. But Julie watched excitedly as Amanda's "turn" began.

SMACK! The sound reverberated off the walls again as she felt the sting of his palm. Amanda cried out, while across from her, Julie moaned with lust. Another spank, then another. Matt varied them in intensity and location, but it was enough to make the redhead feel some definite heat. She counted eight swats, and then he stopped.

As he'd done with Julie, Matt slipped his hand between Amanda's thighs. She moved her feet slightly further apart to provide access for him, briefly wondering if he or Julie would notice, and if this further earmarked her as a slut. She shut her eyes as he slipped two fingers inside her now and began fucking her, just as he'd done to his girlfriend a few minutes ago. Amanda tried to contain her pleasure, again lest Julie become jealous or upset. She also tried to will herself to not thrust back against his invading fingers, but found herself failing miserably in this regard.

"Mmmmmmmm..." A soft moan, from in front of her. Amanda opened her eyes to find Julie's tightly closed, an expression of bliss on her face. Looking further, the redhead noted the cause--the other woman's left hand was still on the desk, steadying herself, but the other hand had disappeared off of the desktop. Julie was touching herself...

Asher nodded. They both sat down on the cushions, staring out at the horizon. The sunset had the sky turning a brilliant orange, with waves of pink rippling across the sky. Emma leaned back on her hands, her fingertips touching Asher’s. He turned his face, watching her while she looked at the sky. Colour bloomed in her cheeks and he could see her throat constrict as she swallowed. “I know you’re watching me,” she said softly.

“Sorry.”

She faced him. “Will you stop apologising? This is so thoughtful.”

He scanned the roof. Besides the blanket and cushions, he’d brought up a projector, hoping they could watch a film when the sun went down. He planned to play it against the far wall. It wouldn’t be the greatest image but it would be good enough. There was a small basket next to the projector; he’d brought up some wine, chocolate treats and popcorn. Inside were also a few menus for local takeaways.

When he’d set everything out, the idea had been much more romantic. That was why he’d placed tiny candles around the roof. He’d hoped Emma wouldn’t see it as a cop out.

“Are you sure?” He pulled the menus from the basket. “You get to choose.”

She looked at him through hooded eyes, taking her bottom lip between her teeth. The woman had his knees quaking…and he was sitting down. She’d appeared in his life out of nowhere, slid into his daily thoughts without invitation, and she was now consuming his dreams. He didn’t have a fucking clue how to deal with her. If he was being truthful to himself, right now he was flying by the seat of his pants and doing whatever entered his head. After setting the scene on the roof, he’d questioned whether it was too much? Too romantic? Or even not enough for a date, after all that’s what they had agreed to.

“How about Thai?” she asked, holding up a menu to one of his favourite places. “Perfect. I’ll order; you open the wine.”

Emma agreed, allowing him to take his phone with him as he walked to the edge of the roof. He dialled the restaurant and ordered a selection of dishes. He took a second to breathe, to gather himself again before he needed to get back to her.

The streetlights began to switch on, the little globes popping orange as they illuminated the pavements. The swell of people grew as they made their way to bars and clubs. The noise of their chatter echoed off the walls and up to his roof.

Tonight wasn’t the first time he’d been up here. In the summer he spent most nights listening to the conversations while he read a book. He felt far less lonely when he could pretend he was a part of it all. Rarely did he take Ben up on his offers to go out. On occasion he wondered why the hell the bloke stayed around. He wasn’t the easiest of friends to have.

“Did you know he was accepted at Harvard Law School when he was only eighteen years old? I was highly impressed when I read all about it,” Clarke said, pouring hot water into our mugs. I pulled out a teaspoon from the drawer and took the milk out of the small fridge.

“Who? God’s gift to women?” I scoffed, pouring full-fat milk into my tea. The only reason I looked up from the milk carton was because it went quiet. When I turned, just as I dreaded, Parks was standing with arms crossed in the doorway wearing his black suit ensemble and an inward, amused smirk. Clarke cleared an imaginary lump from his throat, picked up his tea cake and mug, then scuttled from the room, leaving me. Shit house.

“Hi.” He smirked. His green eyes were bright and amused as they watched me. I quickly turned my back, placed the carton of milk back in the fridge, and said fuck under my breath for getting caught. “So you think I’m God’s gift to women?”

Oh God, he heard me. I tried to hide my smirk by biting my lip as I turned to face him.

“No. That’s what you think you are.”

“Perhaps you are God’s gift to me?”

I laughed at his ridiculous attempt to sweeten me up. “I am not a gift to you, Parks. And if I was a gift, it sure as hell wouldn’t be from God.”

His eyes narrowed briefly as if he were afflicted. “Evelyn, I notice you have an incredible inferiority complex.”

I blinked at his vocabulary. “Come again?”

He sighed in a way that indicated my obliviousness was adorable to him. “You have low self-esteem.”

“I do not,” I shot back, extremely defensive because that’s what I did. I couldn’t take compliments or criticism. “Why are you even in here?” I glanced around the room. “Don’t you have Jittery Joanna to run around after you?” His green eyes stared at me for a second as though he was trying to figure out who I was referring to. Then he chuckled and pinched the bridge of his nose. It made me laugh, because seeing God’s gift smile was surprisingly refreshing; he completely lit up.

Jittery Joanna is on her break, and as I watched your fine physique strut in here, I felt obliged to follow.” Proving he liked what he saw, his insatiable gaze lowered down the length of my curvaceous body dressed in a tight-fitted black dress.

“Really? You don’t seem the sheep type to me.”

“Trust me, I am not the sheep, Evelyn, but the wolf. I always take the last bite.”

Oh. “Looks like you’re out of luck. Clarke just had the last tea cake.” I took a long sip of my tea as he watched me thoughtfully. I knew damn well he wasn’t talking about pastries. But I wasn’t going to be subjected to his dirty-minded ways. Even if my body was telling me to get sucked in, my sensible mind was telling me otherwise, and I had learned to listen to my head.

“What about your cake, Evelyn?”

I almost spat out my tea. “My cake it out of the question, Parks. Besides, it’s not even my birthday.” I hid my grin childishly, mentally thanking Rihanna for that line.

“Hm,” he growled, taking a short step towards me, getting intimately close to my body. He gently took the warm mug from my hand and placed it behind me. My breathing was on hold, and my eyes were glued to his green, hooded irises. I could smell the devouring essence of men’s cologne. It was a burst of freshness along with strong masculinity. Desperately I wanted to push him away, but before I could, his face was inches away from mine, his cool breath against my lips. I’m not sure if it was consciously, but I could taste the watermelon juice he always sipped on his lips. I wasn’t fond of watermelon, but right then, I craved the taste. He brushed the tip of his thumb across my jaw and spread his fingers out across my cheek. “Is your cake moist now, Evelyn? Would you prefer it iced?” He spoke in a low, husky voice that tickled my lips. His tone commanded my nerve endings to stand to attention like their sergeant major had arrived. Shit. He was a charming, expert, arrogant arse who could most certainly make my cake moist—and he did. Even so, he wasn’t having a slice of me.

T Birds 5* Revew

I admit I had some preconceived judgments going into this book.  New author, rich business man, office girl, dominate male, weak submissive female.  Man was I wrong, this was a brilliant book, well written, emotionally driven characters, passionate scenes, head strong introverted woman, controlling yet very protective alpha male who has a sensitive side to him.  This book blew me out of the water and left me with a major book hangover.   I was beating myself up for leaving this on my kindle unread for those few days, if I had known what was between those pages I would have dropped life to get into this story ASAP.

You have heard of people who build walls around themselves for protection, well Evelyn has multiple layers of walls that no one is going to penetrate.  She has had a hard life with two addicts as parents, she struggles with her own addictions and she is the queen of pushing people away and reminding herself why she is a horrible person.  She works in a law firm and lives with her friend, trying to get a second chance at life and is doing a good job at it till Mr. Parks comes to inspect his company.  The way she keeps people at a safe distance is to appear cold, ruthless, mean and stubborn, that usually works but Wade Parks sees something beyond that.  He sees her curves, her sex appeal, and her beauty and knows this is one fragile young woman hiding behind a wall of barbed wire.  He is determined to break her defenses down and get to her soul.

Wade, who hates it when she calls him Parks, is egotistic, arrogant, forceful, controlling and one of the sweetest, protective men I have read about.  He has substance, patience and determination.  He knows with one touch he controls her body, but even he realizes he is going to have to chase her to get to her mind and heart.  He listens to her when she tells him little crumbs of her past life with her family and he searches to replace those missing items she yearns for now.  He pays attention to what music she likes, the dresses she looks at but can’t buy.  He wants to show her how to be loved and when she tells him words is what she pays attention to, he offers to write her a novel to express how he feels.  When her friend finally has enough of Evelyn’s behavior and the first of many secrets come out, the whole world of Wade and Evelyn collapses and we go to cliff hanger, waiting for the next book and more clues to the mysteries still remaining.

Did I mention book hangover?  Well I am suffering.  Lilly James not only described Evelyn and Wade and all of the other characters so well, I felt I was living each of their parts.  I so get Evey, I understand that the risk of abandonment and pain once again could be the crushing blow.  I understand feeling that as soon as someone sees you vulnerable they will attack.  As she said, if he finds out her past will he want to be part of her future?  Wade, he isn’t the alpha male that had everything handed to him.  We don’t know all of his secrets but from the way he acted when he learned a bit more about Evey it is clear he has been hurt as well, but he was still willing to risk his heart for love.  The author gave us hints as to why punishment and control was a driving need for him, not a fetish or kink, but as important as the oxygen he breathes.  Those two are perfect for each other, if they would get out of the way and let love and trust grow.  So here is my warning, if you don’t like being left emotionally raw after a cliff hanger, then you want to get this book and wait for the complete series because you will be raw when you finish the last page.  If you are like me and love the reality of the emotions and waiting like the characters have to wait to find resolution, then GET IT NOW……….I am so impressed with this author, she is certainly on my watch list because I think she has a great future ahead of her in the book world.
