Whenever I hear about a new release from Pepper I get goosebumps, and then she releases the cover and my 1 click fingers start to twitch, then she releases tempting, hot, mouthwatering teasers and I start to nibble on my manicured nails.

Of course there is always the niggling thought, will this be as good? Will all this build up be a let down? How could, in anyone’s imagination, Jethro be anything close to Q?

YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!

Jethro is owed a debt, he is owed, his family are owed and his ‘group’ are owed. And he will collect.

Unfortunately the debt is human, and she has no idea that she is to be the payment.

Nila is happy..ish. An acclaimed designed, loved and coddled by her father and twin brother, Vaughn, in her 20’s she is starting to feel the need to break free, needing love and attention she is finding a strange kind of solace (and sexual freedom) in an anonymous text relationship, when Jethro walks into her fashion show and into her life.

Confused by her father’s reaction and her attraction to Jet and determined to break free and live a little she goes with Jethro, only to find herself immediately confused, bewildered and a little scared.

The story then unfolds (torturously slowly), parts of Nila’s heritage and past come to life and as Jet’s cold and calculating personality comes through, it becomes abundantly clear that this is in his blood, his lifeline, and yet, I don’t think he is the coldest, his father and brother are ice. Claiming their debt and wielding their prize is their only concern, no matter how it makes her feel.

At times in this book my mouth dropped open, human humiliation is one of the things I find hardest to bear, yet this ‘family’ use it as a tool, use it like it’s their right, which they believe it is.

Yet we see occasional traits of humanity in Jet, or is it lust? I’ll be honest, at this point, the end of book 1, I’m not entirely sure.

I got to the end of this book and screamed, flicking my kindle like a deranged woman convinced that I didn’t have the rest of the book. Cliffhanger, can anyone say CLIFFHANGER?? I still have so many questions, so much I don’t understand, that can’t be it???? Really???  But it was, so roll on Book 2 – I CAN NOT WAIT!!!

ONE - Nina's POV

“Huge disappointment, Ms. Weaver.” His cold glare sent a snowstorm wiping away the bonfire in my belly. “I’m done playing games, so cut the bullshit. Time to begin the day.” His voice gave no room for interpretation. A cold draft shot down my back.

My brief reprieve from debts and horrible Hawks was over. I’d been shown something I desperately wanted, but denied it because I failed to please him.

“You could teach me…show me how…” I couldn’t make eye contact with him. Mortification painted my cheeks for both admitting I was clueless and asking a monster to coach me.

Jethro laughed. “You think that will save you from what’s coming? Was that your little plan? To make me fuck you in the hopes I might feel something for you?”

TWO - Jethro's POV

I stood up slowly, clicking my tongue. “Ah, ah, ah, Ms. Weaver. Don’t take that tone with me. You’re the failure. You’re the prisoner. You take what I give you. You do not assume to have any say or authority. That includes listening to everything I deem important to tell you.” Ghosting to a stop in front of her, I murmured, “Is that quite understood?”

I flexed my muscles, welcoming back the soothing chillness of control. I hadn’t liked stepping outside my confines of civility. Things got messy when silence was disrupted. Things got rushed when tempers rose and curses flowed.

And I didn’t want to rush her undoing. I wanted to savour it. Devour it.

Pepper Winters wears many roles. Some of them include writer, reader, sometimes wife. She loves dark, taboo stories that twist with your head. The more tortured the hero, the better, and she constantly thinks up ways to break and fix her characters. Oh, and sex... her books have sex.
