Nicola's Review

5 Bare Naked Stars *****
Connected!

This book was one of my favourite reads last year, and when I got asked to review it for the release of the paperback I jumped at the chance. Kim has done such a fantastic job with this debut and has set the bar high for the rest of the books in this series.
Dahlia ‘Dahl’ London is such a strong heroine after enduring so much loss and pain in her life. Losing her mum, dad and aunty in an aeroplane crash at 14, and then her uncle, she made the best of her life. She had a wonderful, loving boyfriend and an amazing best friend who were always there for her. What she didn’t expect was a local rockstar named River Wild to enter her life. They’re connection was instantaneous, intense and completely threw Dahlia off kilter the moment they met.

“When our eyes connect it felt like minutes, in reality it was mere seconds. At that moment, something happened inside of me. The connection was nothing like I’d ever felt before. It was an electric pull that willed me in and forced me to keep looking at him.”

Scared that if she stayed she’d do something she’d regret, she left.
Fast forward five years and she is still with her loving, now fiancĂ© Ben. He was her childhood best friend and the only constant in her life. But, that all changes when he is tragically killed right in front of her eyes.
A little less than 2 years later and Dahl is finally starting to pick up the pieces of her life since Ben’s death.  Agreeing to start doing some ‘freelance’ jobs for her best friend and company she used to work for, Dahl is sent to Las Vegas to interview that same rockstar she met all those years ago in college.
When they are reconnected, all that electrifying pull they felt in the past comes flooding to the surface, only this time it’s magnified significantly and nothing is standing in their way of being together.

“I feel like fate has brought us together again. I also believe that one night, so long ago, just wasn’t the right time for us. But tonight is.”

Dahlia struggles to make sense of her emotions to begin with. She knows she feels something for River, but she can’t help but feel guilty for wanting to explore this with River. But through time, she accepts that Ben really isn’t coming back. And with River right beside her, she begins to open her heart up to love again.

“I feel alive again—living, breathing, and experiencing life like I never had before—because of him.”

River shows Dahl that she can carry on living and you can find love again.

“I never imagined I could feel so connected to anyone as much as I feel connected to you. I knew I loved you from the moment I saw you. How could I not? Loving you is as easy as breathing.” ~ River

The story is mostly told from Dahlia’s POV, but you do get a look in to River’s head a few times later on. And I liked that. I liked how you got to see how he was feeling, the worries he was going through and how much he really did love Dahlia.

The incorporation of music is truly amazing. With the playlist at the beginning, the chapter titles and the various other song references throughout the book you feel more connected to the book and the feelings the characters are going through at that time. The song choices were perfect and I think Kim really did a magnificent job with this.

And the ending, Holy Shit!!!! What an ending that was. I really didn’t see that coming and was left with my mouth hanging wide open. Seriously, it was such an amazing twist. But I absolutely loved it. It sets you up for things to come in the next book, and you know for a fact that things are going to get rocky.

SPOILER ALERT - DO NOT READ 'TORN' REVIEW
UNLESS YOU HAVE READ 'CONNECTED'
5 Bare Naked Stars *****
Torn!

Kim has done it again. She has completely blown me away, yet again and exceeded my expectations with this book.

Torn continues on from where Connected left. Dahlia and River are about to hop on plane to get married after deciding they don’t want to wait any longer. They are completely happy and so much in love and ready to move on with their future. That is until Dahlia receives a phone call that will prove to test the strength and limit of their relationship.

Ben is alive. He didn’t get shot. He didn’t get killed. Instead he has been in witness protection for sticking his nose and investigating something he shouldn’t of. Now that he is back he wants nothing more than to pick up where he left of 3 years ago, including getting Dahlia back. But Dahlia doesn’t react the way he hopes, she doesn’t go running into his arms declaring her undying love for him and her desire to be with him again.

“I need to get her alone and forget about all the words. I need to make her remember what we had—the love we shared, the sex—if I do, it will come to her then, and she’ll come back to me.”

To begin with, Dahlia struggles to come to terms with the fact that Ben is back, and the past grief that comes back to the surface. She becomes torn between the man she loves now- who helped her to feel alive again and the man who was her first love.

“My intense connection with River is undeniable. The love I have for him is like nothing I’ve ever felt before; but Ben was my first love and that kind of love never leaves you—does it?”

These confusions in feelings really puts a strain on Dahlia and River’s relationship. River’s worries have intensified now that Ben is back. He no longer has to try and compete with a ghost, but the living, breathing man himself. And he continues to have these struggles no matter how many times Dahlia tries to reassure him that nothing is going to tear them part.

“I want to believe your love is only for me. That your lips are mine. That your kisses are meant for me. That your body belongs to me.”

They have a lot of fights, and they both run away instead of talking things out a lot of time. But through it all, their love stays strong. River sticks with her when she struggles to figure things out and refuses to give up.
We do learn that River keeps a lot of secrets from Dahlia, and she starts to think whether she can truly trust him. But when you find out the reasons behind him keeping it from her, you can’t help but understand why he did it. It’s evident how much he loves Dahlia and just wants to protect her. He never gives up, and through his continued support, love and compassion, you know he is the right person for Dahlia.

“A long time ago, I wished for you and now I have you. See ... wishes really do come true even if you tell someone your wish.”

Kim really did an amazing job ending Dahlia and River’s story the way she did. You can’t help but feel happy for them, but sad at the same time to see it come to an end.  I am looking forward to the future books in the series though, and I’m sure River and Dahlia will show their faces now and again.

Like in ‘Connected’, ‘Torn’ is mostly written in Dahlia’s POV, but we do get to read a little more about what Ben is going through from excerpts in his journal. I had mixed feelings about Ben throughout the book. At the beginning I was completely shocked that he thought he’d be able to come back and pick things up as if he had never left. Sorry dude, it doesn’t work that way. I also felt that he was selfish a lot of the times, but by the end of the book I couldn’t help but feel a little sorry for him. I really hope he is able to move on from this and find his own HEA.
The music choices again, were absolutely fantastic and matched the feelings at the time perfectly.

I have always had a passion for reading my entire life. I love it so that I dedicated my life to educating children. As a teacher, I have had the profound pleasure of teaching children to read and explore their imaginations through a good book. Just recently I decided to write a story that had been on my mind. Now I have several that I want to turn into additional books. Writing has become a passion that I dearly love.

I live with my handsome husband in Southern California. We enjoy the relaxed lifestyle that California provides. We have two beautiful dogs, but no children.

Nicola's Review

5 Bare Naked Stars *****

I honestly couldn't put this book down. As soon as I started reading it, I was a goner from RL.  My husband got ignored a lot and so did the housework. Carlie pulls you in from the first page and takes you on a captivating journey of love, trust, loss and suspense.
Natalie has experienced so much loss and pain in her life. At 19 she loses both her parents and is left to raise her younger sister.  A few years later, she has to go through that pain and grief yet again when her sister Jessica is tragically killed in a car accident.

"I had finally felt ok with it being just Jessica and me. We had made it through the darkest part and were moving on. Now that she's gone, I feel like I have fallen down a deep well and there is no way out."

And on top of that, her ex-boyfriend left and completely broke her heart. Feeling absolutely alone, Natalie builds some tight walls around her heart to protect her from getting hurt again, refusing to let anyone in close enough or trust.
Enter Mac. . He is one of the most heart-warming, caring, honest guys ever, who really does have a heart of gold.  Losing his own parents at such a young age, he can relate to what Natalie is going through and tries to comfort her when they first meet at thanksgiving.
A few weeks later they find themselves in Vegas with their friends for a pre-wedding weekend away.
What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas right?...Wrong. Waking up the next day after a few too many drinks will prove that Mac and Nat's lives are about to change. Natalie completely freaks out, while Mac stays strangely calm.  He feels the strong connection he has with Natalie and will do anything to convince her that they belong together.

"Nat, we both know life doesn't come with any guarantees. I'm not perfect and the chances are I could hurt your feelings at some point, but I'm crazy about you, and I want to be with you."

So Natalie decides to throw caution to wind, and give Mac a chance. And he really does prove to be a gentleman. He has a presence about him that automatically relaxes Natalie and puts her at ease. She finds comfort in him and finds that she can be herself around him without putting on a front. He shows Natalie that she is worthy of love and can find happiness.

"Natalie, I want you, I need you, and most importantly, I love you. Never doubt that. Nothing can change how I feel about you."

But just when they're trying to move forward together, someone comes along and throws a spanner in the works.  That someone is Cassie, Mac's ex.  She thinks Mac belongs to her and refuses to let things get in her way. Including Natalie.

"Mac, I don't want to argue about an inconsequential girl. I want to discuss us getting back together".

She really is an evil bitch and stops at nothing to get what she wants. But she's not the only one who tries to tear them apart. At the trial of her sister’s death Natalie comes face to face with her ex. Completely caught unawares by his presence Natalie is a bit unnerved but tries to act unaffected by him. Until he tells her he wants her back.
Will Mac and Nat's relationship survive what they are both facing?
This really was a beautiful, heart-felt story. I felt connected to the characters and felt every emotion they were going through. it just poured out of the pages. You can't help but pray, that after everything they've been through, they get to have the happy ending they deserve.

Being the first book I have read by Carlie Sexton I was absolutely blown away by it but it definitely won't be the last book I read by this author. I have already bought The Killer Next Door Series and can't wait to see what other books she has in store for us in the future.

**Release Week Blog Party** A Tragic Wreck by T K Leigh

BLOG-PARTY

Happy Release Week Party friends! I’m so excited to FINALLY be able to share the continuation of Olivia and Alexander’s story with you all. I loved A Beautiful Mess but I love A Tragic Wreck even more. While I was editing it and getting it ready for publication, even though I had already read it hundreds of times before, I still found myself getting emotional at certain times. It’s a rollercoaster of a story and I hope you are all ready for the ride.

There’s going to be a lot of angst, a lot of screaming at your kindle for the characters to do certain things. One simple action could fix everything, but do they do that? Like here for instance…

God, I love that sound, he thought as his body came alive with electricity. It had been over a month since he had felt that sensation. Looking out over the horizon, his heart raced as he searched for the source of that laughter. He heard that sound in his dreams every night. Only one person had a laugh that beautiful. He was certain his Olivia was near. Grabbing his coffee, he walked over to the edge of his balcony, taking in several people running on the beach.

That’s when his heart almost stopped.

There she was, running up the shoreline toward his hotel. He stilled, watching as she placed one leg in front of the other in rapid succession, her hips moving in perfect rhythm. She made running look so easy.

His brain tried to tell his body to move, to run out of his suite and onto the beach. But he remained completely frozen, shock etched across his strong face. He stared as Olivia stopped running, looking in the direction that she had just come from. He could almost feel her smile as she stood gazing up the beach, laughing at something. Alexander followed her eyes to see a relatively tall man running toward her, obviously having trouble keeping up. He kept watching as she took a deep breath, the smile gone from her face. She slowly turned and looked out over the ocean.

And that’s when Alexander saw it. The sadness. The hurt. The loss. He knew that look all too well.

Because it was the same way he felt.

To start the party off right, here’s a brand new teaser from A Tragic Wreck.

The pain was back. It never really left, but Olivia had felt hopeful earlier when she decided to return to Boston and pour her heart out to Alexander. But now it had returned and the hurt was too much. She needed something to dull the ache. Her heart beat rapidly and she felt a panic attack coming on. Running to the bathroom, she rummaged through her medicine cabinet looking for the bottle Dr. Greenstein had prescribed to help with her anxiety.

She grabbed it and walked downstairs with her laptop, searching for the bottle of bourbon she was sure had her name on it. Popping two valium, she gulped down the liquid, thankful for the warmth spreading through her body. After throwing another couple of valium pills into her mouth and finishing almost half the bottle of alcohol, the pain … was finally dulled. The last thing she remembered was staring out at the crashing waves of the ocean before the numbness took over.

T.K. Leigh, otherwise known as Tracy Leigh Kellam, is a producer / attorney by trade. Originally from New England, she now resides in sunny Southern California with her husband, dog and three cats, all of which she has rescued (including the husband). She always had a knack for writing, but mostly in the legal field. It wasn’t until recently that she decided to try her hand at creative writing and is now addicted to creating different characters and new and unique story lines in the Contemporary Romantic Suspense genre.

Her debut novel “A Beautiful Mess” has garnered relative praise, having been an Amazon Best Seller, an Amazon Top-Rated book. Recently, the book was named by The Guardian as a top reader-recommended self-published book of 2013 as well as a 2013 Reader’s Favorite in Publisher’s Weekly in addition to being named an Amazon Romance Editor’s Fan Favorite for Top Debut Author and Best Page Turner.

Giving In
(The Sandy Cover Series Book 1)
by M.R. Joseph

Releases end February

Raphael Cruz doesn't do it. He just doesn't. Cruz doesn't fall in love. He's a "get in and get out" kind of guy. Ladies love him and fall all over him for his swoon worthy good looks and overwhelming sex appeal. He knows how to talk to them and tells them exactly what they want to hear. When he's done making them scream his name, he shows them straight to the door. The meaning of the word love doesn't exist in his world. But that could all change with a wink of a girl's eye... And one hot-as-hell romp in a bar bathroom.

Harlow Hannum is your typical girl-next-door. She has the brains, the beauty, and the money. What she doesn't have is the luxury of being someone's first choice in the game of love. She always comes in a distant second place, leaving her guarded with her feelings. Lies, betrayal, and secrets of her past follow her wherever she goes, no matter how hard she tries to hide them.  That is until she's reunited with the one guy who can ignite the spark in her heart that's been extinguished for so long.

With sunny days, heated nights, and love lingering in the air in the beach town of Sandy Cove anything can happen. Especially when fate steps in for Harlow and Cruz. Will their blossoming friendship turn into unexpected love or will the collision of their opposing worlds be the end of what could have been?
