***Review*** The Fix by Sylvie Stewart

The Fix

A Carolina’s Connections Novel- Book 1

By Sylvie Stewart

Follow this fun and unforgettable cast of characters as they find their way to love and a happily ever after! Carolina Connections is a series of steamy romantic comedies all set in North Carolina. The characters are real and down-to-earth; their struggles and triumphs are easy to identify with, and their humor is accessible.

And did I mention the steamy part?

Each book in the series can be read as a standalone

My life is a friggin’ fairytale—just not the kind any single girl would ever want to star in.

Like any good heroine, I have challenges to face. Getting my son to wear pants is one; dealing with my snooze-fest of a job is another. Then there’s the Beast, my freeloading brother who’s worn a permanent dent in the couch at my new place. And no fairytale would be complete without a smoking hot prince, of course. Too bad he’s a complete ass.
My instincts scream at me to steer clear of Nate Murphy. Because, if life has taught me anything, there is no such thing as happily ever after.

I may not be a superhero, but I do my best to come to the rescue when I’m needed. And, hey, I just moved halfway across the country after a single phone call from my mom. But being back home and taking on the responsibilities involved makes me a bit cranky at times. Unfortunately, the one time I completely lose my cool is in front of the hottest girl I’ve ever met. I’ve got my work cut out for me if I’m going to fix this. But I will fix this.

I’ll be anything Laney Monroe needs me to be … a superhero, a prince, or just a guy she might take a chance on.
Review by Tara *****

The characters in The Fix make this book amazing! From their relationships to the crude jokes they make to each other, each one playing off the other perfectly. Laney is my spirit animal. She is spunky through and through. Laney is a strong and confident mother that puts her family and friends before herself. But Laney isn’t afraid to stand up to whomever she needs to....and Nate falls victim to that.

“Paging Superman, I think I found your long lost, scruffier, sexier, and broodier twin. It was at this point I patted myself on the back for not wearing high heels because if I had, I would surely be kissing the dirt right about now.”

Feeling stressed and slightly out of control, Nate has been thrown into a new life. Helping out the family business, the last thing Nate expects is to meet a fireball that can bring him to his knees! Learning to be back home, and how to work with family, Nate gets a breath of fresh air with Laney.

“I continued to push him out. All I could do was shake my head. My mind was so discombobulated and the tears wouldn’t stop. I felt my heart breaking but I wasn’t entirely sure of the source.”

I loved everything about this book! The humour, the heart-filled moments and I cannot forget the sexual tension (bites fist). Sylvie tackles every angle in The Fix! I cannot wait to read more from Sylvie!

They say opposites attract. Someone needs to tell that to Emerson Scott.

All I ever wanted was to play ball. When an act of sheer stupidity took that dream away, I feared I’d never bounce back. But now I have the opportunity to coach an up-and-coming phenom, and I'm giving it all I've got. The fact that I've been lusting after his smoking-hot sister only sweetens the deal. Emerson may be buttoned up like a school librarian, but I play my best when I’m under pressure … and I always bring the heat.

Never lose focus. That’s rule number one. My life is a series of carefully calculated decisions, all aimed at ensuring a successful future. The last thing I expected was to find myself suddenly acting as guardian for my younger brother, but I can adjust for his sake. I’m not about to let one change make me lose sight of my goals. Unfortunately, my brother’s very hot and very young baseball coach doesn’t give a fig about my plans. He has a plan of his own—one that includes making me fall for him. Gavin Monroe may play like a pro, but that boy will never win this game.

Our Review
Review by Kristie *****

The Game is a slow burn, with an equally slow build...but a sensuous center, and a super sweet finish...

Marking the fourth installment of the Carolina Connections series by award winning author Sylvie Stewart, The Game has something for everyone. A sweet love story featuring a straight-laced career woman, and a fun-loving but dedicated baseball coach, this book is guaranteed to make you smile...and swoon. Emerson Scott is a workaholic, with big career aspirations as a high-powered corporate lawyer. Determined to make it in the “good ol’ boy” world of global contracts, hostile takeovers, and golf swings, Emerson has her eyes on the prize and a strict regiment. A sweetheart of a woman, she loves her family and friends dearly, but doesn’t seem to have enough time for them...let alone a man. When her brother comes to live with her, his baseball dreams land her in the sights of a sexy, and very determined, young coach at the local Baseball Academy. Though she can feel the attraction from the top of her head to the tips of her toes, she refuses to give into temptation. But,

Gavin Monroe is nothing if not persistent...and patient. When the former major league hopeful sets his sights on her, his aim is true...and his endurance tested. How does a young, hot-blooded male win the heart of a stubborn, determined career woman?  With baseball of course...and sandwiches...
The Game was a sweet and very sexy read, filled with fun moments and plenty of humor. Much like the drink of the same name, this story simmers in your blood like a slow comfortable screw against the wall. The plot and storyline have a slow build that may leave you wanting and impatient at first, but the sweet happy ending is worth the wait. This is not a wham, bam, thank you ma’am kinda book, and I loved it!  The characters are real, and dynamic, with individual personalities and attitudes. Each one easy to love...mostly...  The chemistry and sense of family, and love between them is awesome. A family I would truly love to belong to!  Though I keep touting the sweet, gooey center of this book, don’t be fooled...there is plenty of heat and “batting practice” to be had as well!  An all around great book, that left me smiling and ready for more.

Marilyn and her husband live in the northwest U.S., not too far from the Canadian border. She thinks the long, cold winters are perfect “writing weather.” Most of the time, she doesn’t mind the short days, or the snow—except when she needs to drive in a blizzard, in the dark.

Marilyn started writing sexy stories “just for fun” and she’ll joyously admit she’s obsessed with creating hard-core dominant heroes and happily-ever-after endings.

Writing erotic romance lets her explore love, passion, and sex, through the lens of different characters and settings. It’s also a way to keep her imagination kindled during the September to March “cold snap.” Marilyn loves music, flowers, sci-fi and romance movies, and taking daily walks with Precious, her rescued dog.

She’s a country girl at heart, and although she imagines travelling to distant, romantic shores, her favorite place is home with her family.

Reading to Paige while she snuggled innocently against his side, turned out to be hell. Luc had to keep the book open over his lap. His cock didn’t care about the story, it only wanted to escape and touch any part of Paige’s sweet little body.
So far, the tip of his erection had stayed wedged under his belt, but it seemed eager to communicate as if to say, “Excuse me, little sub, if you’re going to sit so close, you need to wrap your hands or lips around me and…”
Luc frowned at the book and paused reading. The words made no sense to his distracted, bloodless brain. He drew a calming breath and tamped down his frustration.
“What happens next?” Paige pointed to the open page. “The hero is creeping down the dark corridor… and what happens?”
Luc had a damn good idea of what could happen next, but it had nothing to do with the story. “He steals the secret documents and escapes the enemy’s stronghold.”
“Did you just tell me the end?” She squinted up at him, her face mere inches from his chin.
“Possibly.” When he tipped his head down, he focused on her eyes, not her lips, but arousal still roughened his voice. “I haven’t finished this book yet.”
She raised a russet brow at him. “It doesn’t sound like you want to finish either. You’re growling.”
“Not at you.”
“The book? I didn’t think it was that bad.”
“It has redeeming qualities.” It covered his lap, for one. He couldn’t judge the story. Right now, all he could think about was getting this woman under him and his cock inside her. “Paige…it’s time to call it a night.”
“I guess so.” She sat up and glanced at the clock. “Wow, it is getting late.”
Luc stood and held out his hand. “I’ll walk you up.”
“Thanks.” She gripped his hand, and he gently tugged her to her feet. “That was nice listening to you. You have a really great voice.”
“I used to read to Jen while Mom fixed dinner.” He led Paige up the stairs.
“Was your mom a good cook?”
“No, terrible—but she tried hard and was so loving, we ate whatever she made with a smile.” Luc stopped at her bedroom door and focused on Paige’s eyes. Do not look at her mouth. Do not kiss her. Do. Not.
“Aww, how sweet.” Her beautiful lips parted in a soft smile, and she sighed. “I wish…”
Oh, hell. That mouth… so kissable… so fuckable. He forced his gaze up and caught her glancing at his mouth. Yeah, he was screwed, and not in a good way. “What do you wish?”
She met his eyes, a blush tinting her cheeks. “Honestly?”
“Never lie to me.” He knew she’d done exactly that the first day when she’d tried to convince him she remembered who she was. Although he understood her instinctive need to cover a vulnerability and protect herself, now she knew him better, and he’d only accept the truth.
“Okay.” Her throat moved when she swallowed. “The first wish was that I had a family like yours, a place filled with love and laughter. Then I looked at your mouth and wished you would kiss me.” She looked down. “I know it’s wrong, but I had this need for you to just take me in your arms.”
“It isn’t wrong, but I won’t do that. Not until you know who you are and understand what I’ll demand from you.”

Elizabeth Hayley is actually "Elizabeth" and "Hayley," two friends who love reading romance novels to obsessive levels. This mutual love prompted them to put their English degrees to good use by penning their own. The product is Pieces of Perfect, their debut novel. They learned a ton about one another through the process, like how they clearly share a brain and have a persistent need to text each other constantly (much to their husbands' chagrin).

"Elizabeth" lives with her husband, daughter, and nutjob of a dog. "Hayley" lives with her husband, son, and her own crazy dog. Thankfully, their children are still too young to read.

Elizabeth Hayley's writing motto is best captured by the words of Patrick Dennis: "I always start with a clean piece of paper and a dirty mind."

Our Review

Wendy's 5 star Review

There is a highly regarded category of books at Bare Naked Words HQ known as “That fucking book” category. It only has two books in it. They are books that we consider amongst the most amazing books we’ve ever read but we also know we will never read them again because they crushed us.  Destroyed us. We have never recovered.  When we met SC Stephens last year we told her Thoughtless fell in to this category, she looked slightly scared of us, but we explained it is a huge compliment.  The only other book currently in this category is Natexus by Victoria L James who quite frankly should be ashamed of herself for causing us so much distress.

With This Man emotionally drained me and yet ignited a fire in my heart. It has had such an intense effect on me that it is very close to being put in the “That Fucking Book” category. It’s hovering on the outskirts and may yet enter those realms never to be read again, but always remembered with passion.  I am still too traumatised to make that judgement yet.

At its very core the writing is fluid, lyrical, sublime.  Everything we have come to know from Jodi Ellen Malpas.

With This Man is divine, harrowing and bewitching. In my mind every scene was a vision, in my heart every emotion was felt.

Jodi makes it seem effortless.

I am not spoiling the story by saying that Ava’s accident scene was harrowing, to be inside Jesse’s head when he realises what has happened gutted me. And as we travel the journey of the two lovers rediscovering each other, I was consumed with fear, I felt damaged, tormented, and yet there were moments of humour and flashbacks to memories that had brought them on this journey. Lace, the dress trampling and much more. The twins are a big part of this story and it was so much fun to get to know them now they are older. Sam and Kate, Drew and Raya are all still a big part of Jesse and Ava’s lives as is John.  Family is so important throughout this series. There were laugh out loud moments, Maddie is still giving Jesse the run around.  That girl can trample. And how this man deals with turning fifty is so funny.

Throughout earlier books in the series we had felt every emotion with Ava, understood the overwhelming feeling as Jesse consumed her. I remember how pissed off I was with Jesse in so many parts of the series. Now it’s time to get under the skin of Jesse, travel a path of pain and confusion with him.  But it was almost too much to bear. There is a scene that I know will be discussed over and over that was truly unbearable. To watch this magnificent, strong man reduced to such helplessness will live with me for ever.

The searing hurt of his beloved Ava not knowing him, his protectiveness of the twins and the absolute insistence he could make it right pulled me through this story, as if only by finishing it would I be able to help him rebuild his family. I felt I had a responsibility.

I shall say no more, but when you get to “it”, you will know. That’s all I can say on the matter.
One of the best books I have ever read. One of the most gut wrenching books I have ever read. One of the most beautiful books I have ever read.

With This Man by Jodi Ellen Malpas, not for the faint hearted but definitely one for those who like a little trampling.

About the Author:

Jodi Ellen Malpas wrote her debut series, The This Man Trilogy, in secret, worried about what people might think if they knew what her imagination was capable of. She was shocked herself. But she finally found the courage to unleash her creative streak and self-published THIS MAN – the first book of the This Man Trilogy – in October 2012. She took a chance on the story with a hero who soon became one of modern day fictions most prolific alpha male characters. Jesse Ward – also affectionately known as The Lord of The Manor, sparked incredible reactions from women across the globe and catapulted Jodi into the world of women’s fiction.

Jodi went on to self-publish the second book in the trilogy, Beneath This Man in Jan 2013, just before Grand Central Publishing, part of the Hachette Book Group, picked up the popular trilogy and the unknown Jodi. The third book of the trilogy, This Man Confessed, took Jodi to the top of the bestsellers lists, earning her the proud title of #1 New York Times Bestselling Author. This Man has since been voted one of the top romance novels of all time.

With so much love, enthusiasm and a thirst for her words from her readers, Jodi suddenly wasn’t afraid of her imagination anymore. She went on to write The One Night Trilogy with the delectable and mysterious Miller Hart, and stole the hearts of her readers once again. Her first stand-alone novel, THE PROTECTOR, released in September 2016 and has since been nominated for a Reviewers’ Choice Best Book Award. Jodi’s next stand-alone novel. THE FORBIDDEN, is set for release in August 2017.

All seven of her published novels have hit the New York Times best sellers list – as well as the Sunday Times list and various international best seller lists. Her work is now published in over 24 languages across the world.

Jodi was born and raised in the Midlands town of Northampton, England, where she lives with her two boys and a beagle. She is a self-professed daydreamer, a mojito addict, is famous for her obsession with Converse, and has a terrible weak spot for Alpha Males. Writing powerful love stories and creating addictive characters has become her passion – a passion she now shares with her devoted readers.
