Review

Review by Kristie K.

Another gut-twisting instalment of the Steel Brothers Saga, Ms. Hardt has left me breathless once again…

Just when you think the story can’t get more intense, Ms. Hardt holds that carrot out just a little farther…and adds a cliff…and a few sharp rocks for good measure.  The story picks up where Possession left off, but now the focus is on Jonah Steel.  The oldest of the Steel children, Jonah (Joe) runs the beef side of the ranch, but feels the responsibility of the entire operation, as well as his siblings.  Joe has carried the guilt of his family's secret for 25 years…that fateful day a heavy weight on his heart, a weight he doesn’t feel he deserves to lose.  At his brother’s encouragement, Joe agrees to meet with Talon’s therapist, a gorgeous, leggy blonde that Jonah had met once before at a conference in Denver.  After seeing her again, though, Joe has more than just therapy on his mind.

Melanie Carmichael wonders every day if she is truly capable of helping the patients she treats everyday at her practice in Grand Junction.  With a tragedy of her own in her recent past, Melanie feels inadequate to help when Jonah Steel walks into her office for his first visit.  Ironically his deep sense of guilt resonates within her, as her own guilt eats at her from the inside out.  The attraction they feel for one another is immediate, and so palpable it is like an entity in itself each time they are together.  Though her body desperately wants Jonah, her mind keeps her from acting on it, insisting on keeping the boundaries their professional relationship requires.  When her own tragedy rears it’s head again, Melanie forgets all boundaries and runs straight into the arms of Jonah Steel.  The question is, can she forgive herself enough to let another person in, and can she help Jonah forgive himself?

Ms. Hardt has continued to weave her web in this installment, and the results are every bit as good…or perhaps better…than what we have seen so far.  With every answer, there is another question.  Every straightaway has another turn, and every bridge has a drop.  The storyline in Melt flowed freely, enveloping me in the story and making me turn another page.  The pace was quick, but steady, and the heat nearly singed the inner workings of my kindle.  The characters are every bit as relatable and easy to love as Talon and Jade from the first three books, with maybe a touch more rugged maturity.  As the pieces of their family mystery come together, other threats come to light.  Every move has a counter-move, and the resulting dance is breathtaking.  I absolutely love Joe and Melanie, and am seriously nursing a book hangover as I ponder what could possibly happen next.  The master of the cliffhanger, Ms. Hardt will keep me on edge, questions running through my mind until the next book releases.  Knowing I have to wait until February is a delicious torture…  A slow burn, indeed.
